Ans: Jagadish Chandra Bose received his early education in a vernacular school because his father believed that a child should first learn their mother tongue. He also felt it was important for children to stay connected with their own culture and people.

b. What did Bose’s mother do when he brought his friends home from school?
Ans: When Bose brought his friends home, his mother warmly welcomed them and served food to all, treating them equally without any kind of discrimination.

c. Who was Lafont? How did he influence Bose?

Ans: Lafont was a Jesuit priest and a dedicated teacher. He inspired Bose to take a deep interest in natural science through his passionate and engaging teaching style.

d. Why did Bose refuse to accept his salary?

Ans: Bose refused to accept his salary because he was offered less pay than his European colleagues and was denied proper research facilities. Out of self-respect and strong national pride, he continued teaching without accepting any salary until justice was done.

Ans- Yes, I think Bose was uninterested about securing patency right.

He was a great scientist, who did not run after the commercial benefits for his inventions. On the contrary, he made his inventions public for the advancement of science.

d. What were the various awards and honours conferred on Bose?

Ans- He was awarded knighthood by the British government in 1917. He was also conferred awards like ‘Fellow of the Royal Soceity’, ‘Companion of the order of the Indian Empire’ etc.

e. Name some of his books and publications.

Ans- The books and publications are - ‘Response in the living and the Non-living’(1902),’The Nervous Mechanism of Plants’(1926),’Major Mechanism of plants’(1928) and ‘Niruddesher Khoje’(1896).

Read the following passage and underline the adverbs. An example is given :

Shanti is a young girl. She lives in a remote village with her family. Her school is five miles away from there. But Shanti attends her school daily. She stood third in her class in the previous examination. She believes that she can do better. She is now concentrating on her studies more seriously. Shanti never behaves rudely with her classmates. So they like her. She follows her teachers attentively in the class. Therefore the teachers really like her. They often enquire whether she is facing any problem. Why do many teachers think that Shanti is the best girl in the class? It is because Shanti has faced the challenges of life bravely.

In this lesson you have read the biography of a great Indian scientist. Now write a biography ( in about seventy words) of Prafulla Chandra Roy, who was another great Indian scientist. You can use the following hints:

Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy

Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy was a great Indian scientist, born on 2nd August 1861 in Khulna, now in Bangladesh. A brilliant student from childhood, he studied at Hare School and passed F.A. from Metropolitan College in 1882. He won the Gilchrist Scholarship and completed B.Sc. and D.Sc. from Edinburgh University.

In 1889, he became a Chemistry professor at Presidency College. In 1896, he prepared Mercurous Nitrite in the lab and later founded Bengal Chemicals. He lived a simple life, was kind to students, and remained a bachelor. He joined Science College as Palit Professor and passed away on 16th July 1944. His contributions to science are remembered with great respect.
