STRONG ROOTS

1. Why do you think the autobiographical piece has been aptly entitled ‘Strong Roots’?

or

 Justify the title.

or

Comment on the title of the extract ‘Strong Roots’.

‘Strong Roots’ is an autobiographical extract taken from A.P.J Abdul Kalam’s autobiography ‘Wings of Fire’. In this extract Kalam describes his childhood, where we came to know about his parents and family background. Here he narrates how his parents influenced him and tutored him to grow up a good human being. The generosity of his mother, the plain lifestyle of his father, and a safe childhood both materially and spiritually taught him the lesson on universal fraternity (brotherhood), humanity and divinity. All these made the roots of Kalam very strong on which he developed his future and career. Thus the title ‘Strong Roots’ is extremely appropriate.

2. ‘Adversity always presents opportunities for introspection’-Who said this to whom ? Explain the line according to the speaker.

Jainulabdeen, A.P.J Abdul Kalam’s father said this to his son.

Kalam’s father was a man of wisdom. Once he explained to Kalam how adversity always presents opportunities for introspection. He said that every human being is a specific aspect of God. As an expression of divine being, one should not be afraid of suffering. Instead, one should try to understand the relevance of sufferings. Jainulabdeen believed that troubles and sufferings have their own benefits. A difficult situation puts a person through a test of tolerance and makes him/ her ready to face all kinds of situations. In this way, adversity widens the scope for self evaluation.

3. ‘Try to understand the relevance of your sufferings’-Who said this to whom ? What is the relevance of suffering ? What was the impact of this comment upon the listener ?

Jainulabdeen, A.P.J Abdul Kalam’s father said this to his son.

Life is not always a smooth journey. Troubles and sufferings are an inseparable part of it. All these are created by God as the spirituality for attaining fulfillment. Whenever we face any trouble we look for helpers and thus a communion is made with others. Again the sufferings give us an opportunity for self-analysis and self observation. From this comment the  listener i.e the author learns that one should not be afraid of difficulties and sufferings, rather face and combat those odds.
