Mahatma Gandhi
Mahatma Gandhi was one of the greatest freedom fighters of India. He spent his whole life in the struggle for the independence of India. He was born on 2nd October 1869, in Porbandar of Gujarat. His father’s name was Dewan Karamchand Gandhi and his mother’s name was Putlibai Gandhi. His original name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. At the age of 13, he was married to Kasturba. He passed the entrance at the age of 17. At, 19 he went to England to study Law. In 1893 he went to South Africa. There he fought against injustice. He came to India in 1915 and joined the freedom movement of India. Gandhiji believed in Ahin-sa (Non-violence). To achieve freedom he started various movements, such as the ‘Non- Non-cooperative Movement’, and the ‘Quit India Movement’ with common Indian folk. His policies forced the Britishers to leave the country. He wrote some notable books such as “The Story of My Experiments with Truth’, ‘Hind Swaraj’ etc. For his great contribution to the country, he was called ‘Mahatma’ by his countrymen.
On 30th January, 1948, he was shot dead. For his services and sacrifice for the country he was named ‘the Father of Nation.’
